Trips & Areas • Self-Guided Pack Llama Rentals
From the Elkhorns next door to the Bob Marshall country, here's where our renters can take a llama string, and the Forest Service rules that come with each place.
Start Here
Every rental from our Clancy ranch is self-guided. After a handling clinic at pickup, you tow our 12 ft stock trailer to the trailhead and lead the llamas yourself, so the choice of country is yours. Stick to trails that are open to pack stock and recommended for it.
Below is a short summary of each area, with links to full pages where we have them. Hunters should also read our elk and deer pack-out guide and hunting page.
A few rules apply on nearly every Montana national forest. Feed must be certified weed-free and tagged. Camping is limited to 16 days at one site. Across much of western Montana, llama feed counts as a bear attractant that has to be attended or stored bear-resistant.

Areas
Closest to the ranch • Helena-Lewis and Clark NF
The range closest to our Clancy ranch: a "mountain island" of meadows, grassy parks, steep gulches and mining history. Seasonal road closures between fall and spring protect elk, so check the Motor Vehicle Use Map. Skip Crow Creek Trail #109 with llamas; the Forest Service says stock is not recommended there.
Elkhorn Mountains llama trips →East of Helena • Helena-Lewis and Clark NF
The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness was designated in 1964 and has about 53 miles of trail. Most access is in the Beaver Creek drainage near Nelson, and some low, dry trails suit spring trips. Water can be scarce. Hunters Gulch trailhead has room for trucks with trailers. Vigilante Campground limits trailers to 16 feet, which our 12 ft stock trailer fits.
Big Belts & Gates llama trips →Lincoln side • Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex
The Scapegoat shares its long northwest border with the Bob Marshall. Near Lincoln, the Arrastra Creek and Alice Creek trailheads list parking for stock trailers. Complex-wide limits are 15 people and 35 head of stock per party. Stock must be led single file, and caching feed is not allowed.
Scapegoat Wilderness llama trips →Swan Range • Flathead NF • Gateway to the Bob
From the Owl Creek Packer Camp trailhead (also called Holland-Gordon), off Holland Lake Road #44 east of Highway 83, Trail #35 runs around the south side of Holland Lake to Upper Holland Lake and on toward the Bob Marshall. The Forest Service describes the trailhead as heavily used by pack strings and stock parties, and often muddy.
Rock Creek drainage • Lolo NF
Small, steep and heavily timbered, about 25 miles east of Missoula, with no lakes. Elk and bear hunters are the most common visitors.
Custer Gallatin NF • Montana–Wyoming
Beartooth Plateau tundra and lakes, plus Absaroka forests and high meadows. Backcountry camping permits aren't required on the Custer Gallatin.
Mountain goat or sheep hunt? Read the FWP moose, sheep, goat and bison regulations. Keep your llamas under close control and give wild sheep and goats a wide berth. FWP works to keep domestic sheep and goats apart from wild herds because of pneumonia risk.
Gallatin Range • Custer Gallatin NF • South of Bozeman
About 17 miles south of Bozeman, with trails to Hyalite Lake, Blackmore Lake, and Heather and Emerald Lakes. The Blackmore trailhead by the reservoir has parking, toilets and drinking water.
From the Owner
Kevin, who owns Helena Backcountry Llamas, has backpacked these trips himself with the llamas. Ask him about them when you book.
Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness • Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF
Upper Seymour Lake is in the Seymour Creek drainage of the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness, on the Wisdom Ranger District. The Forest Service's Seymour Creek Campground is about 11 miles west of Wise River on Highway 43, then north on State Highway 569 and Forest Road 934. It recommends trailers no longer than 18 feet, which our 12 ft stock trailer fits, and has no water or cell coverage.
Pioneer Mountains • Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF
Kevin's Crescent Lake trip is to the Crescent Lake in the Pioneer Mountains west of Melrose, on the Wisdom Ranger District. The Crescent Lake Trail (Trail 92, near Wise River) is listed at 6.3 miles and starts at the entrance to the Forest Service's small Canyon Creek Campground, off Forest Road 7401. To get there from Melrose, drive about 13 miles west on Forest Road 187, then about 4.5 miles southeast on Forest Road 7401. The campground is small, with 3 tent sites and no water or garbage service, and is open mid-June through September, weather permitting.
Self-guided only: you plan the route and lead the llamas. $75 per llama per day, 2-llama minimum, from a herd of 6. A 50% deposit goes through Square when you book, and the balance is due at trip start. The handling clinic at pickup in Clancy is included. You tow the included 12 ft stock trailer yourself (half-ton truck, brake controller, 2" ball, 7-way plug); there's no drop-off. Season May 1–Nov 15, off-season by request.
Trails, roads, closures, fire restrictions and Forest Service orders change, sometimes mid-season. Before every trip, check current conditions and regulations with the ranger district and Montana FWP. Use only trails that are open to pack stock and recommended for it. Skip any trail that is closed to stock or where the Forest Service says stock is not recommended. Our 12 ft stock trailer also needs a trailhead that allows trailers of that length, with room to park and turn your truck and trailer. This page is planning help, not legal advice.
